ILM SSM Development programme

This development award consists of a linked series of courses covering a range of information and topics essential to any leader or manager, plus a review day during which the outcomes of their learning and experiences are discussed and evaluated in a small group.

The award is designed to provide delegates with knowledge and skills in leadership and management practices and behaviour. This award has been created to provide participants with the option to proceed towards a nationally recognised award.


Who is it for?

Anyone new to team leadership or management who would like to follow a flexible training path in order to enhance their learning and career.

Note: Capita Learning & Development is an Institute of Leadership and Management approved provider of training and these programmes are approved and quality assured by the ILM. The outcomes of which may count towards other nationally recognised qualifications including the Introductory certificate in first line management.


Learning objectives

Develop the essential skills needed to build, lead and develop a team
Increase knowledge of human resource management including induction, training, health and safety and conflict resolution
Reflect on own practices
Develop leadership skills and knowledge
Obtain an award approved by the Institute of Leadership and Management and progress to a further award if required.


The route to the award is in 4 stages :


Stage 1

Successful Supervisory Management - 3 days

Stage 2

Successful supervisory management: review day (normally undertaken 2 – 3 months after Stage 1)

Stage 3

Advanced supervisory management (normally undertaken 2 – 4 months after stage 2)

Stage 4

To carry out a presentation (whether informal or formal) to the line manager, back in the workplace.
The presentation should include the key learning points from the development courses (stages 1 – 3) and how these are to be implemented in the workplace.

Complete the development record (which will be supplied during the Stage 3 course) and return to Capita Learning and Development to complete the accreditation process.


On successful completion of these stages, the participant will have their development recognised with the Successful supervisory management award as approved by the Institute of Leadership and Management, and may, if they wish continue their development with the Introductory certificate in first line management or the Institute of Leadership and Management’s Certificate in coaching for team leaders at level 3.
