Employers 'should publish salaries to cut gender wage gap'

Published: 02 July 2008

Employers should disclose information about workers' salaries to help narrow the pay gap between men and women. Harriet Harman has unveiled an Equalities Bill setting out plans to prevent employers paying women less. This will put pressure on employers to publish the average salaries they pay to male and female staff. Ministers hope it will shame them into closing the gap. The Bill will also effectively outlaw "gagging clauses" in employment contracts that forbid the disclosure of salary details. There would be no legal obligation to publish information, but public sector organisations would be told to do so and private employers would be strongly encouraged to follow.
