Effective communication skills are key in our personal and working lives; and vital to achieving both individual and business goals.
At work we often have to deal with a whole range of people, and learning how to work well and communicate effectively with everyone can sometimes be a challenge. Do you always express yourself clearly and succinctly? There are many elements to communication skills; but if learned and employed successfully - effective communication skills can lead to success and new opportunities.
Influencing & persuading skills
Without even being aware of it, we are influencing people in the way they act, behave and the decisions they make on a daily basis. The manner in which individuals persuade and influence others varies and can either have a positive or negative impact on the other party. Body language, tone of voice and choice of words you use all have an effect on those you are communicating with. While some people are not assertive; struggling to articulate their point in a clear and confident manner, others take on more appeasing approach when communicating actions to others, resulting in a negative response.
The key is how to produce positive results when influencing and persuading others; as well as providing an insight into developing assertiveness skills.

A delegates' perspective
Maria Wallis, a team manager at Coral Telebet, attended our Influencing & Persuading skills training course – find out how she put her new influencing skills into practice at work!
Maria Wallis, a team manager at Coral Telebet, attended Capita Learning & Development’s ‘Influencing & persuading skills’ training course, after discussing with the company’s training manager how she could improve communication with her team. “I had been informed that my manner sometimes came across as being a bit abrupt and that some team members would prefer more clarity around what my requirements were”.
Maria’s role involves day-to-day management of a customer service team and also undertakes regular one-to-one meetings with her team to ensure that the service they are providing is of the highest quality. Feedback from Maria’s colleagues suggested that her manner could often be quite curt at times and this occasionally had a negative impact on them. Maria approached her training manager to see if he could recommend any reading material that may provide some solutions, “David suggested I book on Capita Learning & Development’s ‘Influencing & persuading skills’ training course as its content was extremely relevant to the area’s I needed to address.”
Influencing & persuading skills is designed for people at any level who need to persuade and influence others positively. It allows the individual to reduce potential conflict in the workplace and use appropriate language to persuade others. For Maria, the course demonstrated the negative influences her manner was having on certain members of her team and the consequences of this. Maria learnt how to use persuasion techniques in a positive way, through building self-esteem in her team, as well as understanding and motivating them using the verbal and non-verbal communication skills she acquired.
“I really enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone who manages a team like me. I think one aspect of the course I really enjoyed was that it made me think and prepare and learn not to rush into or say things on the spur of the moment.”
